Eligibility requirements for Plano Police applicants are established by the City of Plano, and the Police Officers’ and Fire Fighters’ Civil Service Commission.
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age at the time of testing.
Persons age 45 or older are not eligible to test with the Plano Police Department.
Applicants applying for beginning positions in the Police Department shall have a baccalaureate degree from a college or university accredited by the United States Department of Education or Council for High Education Accreditation at the time of their start date with the Police Department. Applicants possessing at least three (3) years active duty prior military service or two (2) years full time, sworn law enforcement experience (paid) shall have, in lieu of a baccalaureate degree, a minimum of sixty (60) semester hours credit from a college or university accredited by the United States Department of Education or Council for High Education Accreditation at the time of their start date with the Police Department.
Applicants must be United States citizens.
Applicants must be free from disease or physical/mental defects that would prevent the individual from performing the essential duties of a police officer.
Applicants must meet all legal requirements for future licensing and certification as required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education (TCLEOSE).
Applicants eyesight must be correctable to 20/30 in each eye, with appropriate color vision.
Applicants must have normal hearing.
Persons who have been convicted of a felony are not eligible to be licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement and are therefore not eligible to test for a police recruit position with the Plano Police Department. Conviction of conduct that constitutes a Class A or Class B Misdemeanor under State or Federal Law to include the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), within then (10) years will result in temporary disqualification. Crimes involving moral turpitude may result in permanent disqualification and will be considered on a case by case basis with appropriate consideration of circumstances and recency.
A candidate will not be considered for employment while charges are pending for any criminal offense.
Applicants cannot be on probation for any offense on the date of the Civil Service test.
Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and cannot have more than three events (moving violations or at-fault accidents) in the preceding 36 months from the date of the Civil Service test. Applicants cannot have a DWI/DUID, or reckless driving conviction in the preceding ten (10) years from the date of the Civil Service test.
Civil Service rules and regulations prohibit lateral transfer to the Plano Police Department from other agencies.
