Watches and Warnings

Watch vs. Warning - Know the Difference
When an emergency is impending, it is vital to know the differences between a watch, warning, or advisory you may hear on TV, a NOAA weather radio, the internet, or other personal warning system. Please read the following explanations so you know what to do should you hear any Warning, Watch, or Advisory.

Warning
A warning is issued when a hazardous weather or hydrologic event is occurring, is imminent, or has a very high probability of occurring. A warning is used for conditions posing a threat to life or property.

What you should do:

  • Activate your personal emergency plan
  • Take Shelter Immediately
  • Listen to local radio or TV for updates and information on what further actions to take

Watch
A watch is used when the risk of a hazardous weather or hydrologic event has increased significantly, but its occurrence, location, and/or timing is still uncertain. It is intended to provide enough lead time so that those who need to set their plans in motion can do so.

What you should do:

  • Remain alert for approaching storms
  • Listen to local radio or TV for updates
  • Be prepared to move to shelter

Advisory
An advisory is issued when special weather conditions are less serious than a warning. They are for events that may cause significant inconvenience, and if caution is not exercised, it could lead to situations that may threaten life and/or property

What you should do:

  • Stay alert and monitor emergency information resources
  • Ensure you are prepared should the situation develop further
