Median Signs to Reduce Cigarette Litter

Twenty median signs have been installed at intersections throughout Plano that have been recognized as having unusaually large amounts of cigarette litter.  These signs are aimed to remind motorists to "Use Your Ashtray, Not the Roadway" and "Please Don't Litter."

Cigarettes are the most littered item in America (and in the world).  According to TxDOT, 13% of the more than ONE BILLION pieces of litter that accumulate each year on Texas highways is cigarette related (cigarette butts, matches, packaging, etc).  That means 130 million cigarette butts will be tossed out in Texas each year.picture of cigarette litter

It is believed that most people who litter their cigarettes either do so because they don't fully understand the consequences of their actions or they ahve rationalized their behavior.  The website www.cigarettelitter.org reads, "Cigarette filters are made of cellulose acetate tow, not cotton, and can take decades to degrade.  Not only does cigarette litter ruin even the most picturesque setting, but the toxic residue in cigarette filters is damaging to the environment, and littered butts cause numerous fires every year, some of them fatal."
