Sets returned with missing pieces will accrue fines on the paton record until the complete set is returned. If any piece of a set is lost, the patron will be charged the cost of an entire replacement set.

SelfCheck

Check out your own books by using SelfCheck. The SelfCheck machine is easier to use than an ATM. Just follow the directions on the screen. Avoid waiting in line at the circulation desk. On your next visit to the libraries, we will be glad to demonstrate how to use SelfCheck.

Library Cards

How do I get a library card?
Applications may be completed at the circulation desk at any of Plano's five libraries.

You may also register for a card online, using our Online Catalog. (Click on the Patron Account Tab to get started.) If you are not a Plano resident you may be required to pay a yearly fee when you arrive at the library (see Non-Resident information below).

Instructions for online registration are available here.

Library users must be registered in order to borrow materials from the library and to access specific computer services. There are several types of cards available:

Patron Card
Any resident of Plano is eligible to register for a library card providing he/she can verify a current local address. You must present evidence of current local address such as driver's license or another document with your name and your current address. For example, a piece of mail with a current address, such as a recent public utility bill, with typed or computer-generated, printed checks, insurance cards, voter's registration card, lease, purchase agreement.

If children are under 18 years of age, a parent or legal guardian must sign their application and agree to take responsibility for all materials borrowed on the card.

Non-Residents of Plano
Depending on your city of residence you may be required to pay a yearly non-resident fee to acquire a library card with us. Details are available here.

Same Day Computer Use pass
A same day computer use pass will be issued (free) for computer access only (no material checkout and no wireless access) to visitors residing outside of Collin, Dallas, Rockwall, Hunt, Fannin, Grayson, and Denton counties (click here for a list of cities).

Where Can I Use my Card?
You can use your Plano Public Library System card at any of Plano's five libraries (locations).

How can I use my card?
Check out books, audio, magazines, log on to databases, etc.

Must I bring my library card to the library?
Patrons must present a valid Plano Public Library System card in order to check out materials, use the computers, and access account information.  Bring your card every time you come to the library.

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary loan is a service provided to obtain materials which are not owned by  Plano Public Library System (PPLS). Materials that may be obtained include books, audios, videos and photocopies of articles from magazines and newspapers. A PPLS library card is required to use interlibrary loan. Patrons with fines in excess of $5.00 will not be allowed to place ILL requests or check out ILL materials until fines are paid. There is a ten item limit per month per household for interlibrary loan requests.

Service Fee for Interlibrary Loan

Effective Oct. 1, 2011 patrons will be charged a $2.50 postage/courier fee for each ILL item requested and received. The postage fee applies whether or not the item is picked up by the patron. If a request is made but no lending library is able to provide the item, the postage fee will not apply.

ILL requests cannot be requested or filled if unpaid fees on a patron account exceed $5.00 when combined with the ILL fee. Please pay any fees owed prior to making a request.

The change is necessary because of lost funding previously received from the Texas State Library.

How Interlibrary Loan Works:
Patrons  can complete a form available at the reference desk at each library or complete and submit one of the online electronic forms below.  Information is verified and sent to the Interlibrary Loan office. A search is performed on a database that includes over 6,000 institutions nationwide.

Methods for Requesting Materials
Plano Public Library System offers several ways for patrons to request interlibrary loan materials. Forms are available at all libraries and may be completed and submitted at the library.

Here are links to the online request forms:
ILL Book, Audio, Video Request form
ILL Periodical Request form.

Genealogy Interlibrary Loan requests for microfilm - please use this form.

How long does it take to receive my request?
Times vary greatly due to factors such as the location of the lending library and availability of the item requested. A good rule of thumb is three to six weeks.

How much does this service cost?
The fees for mail/courier service described above apply. Normal charges apply for overdue fines or lost books.

When my request arrives how will I be notified?
Patrons will be notified over the phone by the Library's electronic notification system.

How long can I keep the material?
The lending library specifies the checkout period. Occasionally the lending library specifies that the item is for "In Library Use Only" and the material may not leave the library. No renewals are allowed on interlibrary loan materials.

Where do I return the materials?
Interlibrary loan materials can be returned to any of Plano's five libraries or bookdrops at the libraries.

These devices magnify any printed material and transmit it to the attached televisions. The images can easily be adjusted to the required magnification, color and contrast to aid those with vision limitations or difficulties to read print. This equipment has been lent to the library system for a two year period. For more information on this equipment and its availability, contact Haggard Library at 972.769.4250.

Patrons with a visual or physical handicap are eligible for service from the Texas State Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped if their handicap prevents them from reading standard printed material. An "Application for Free Library Service" from the Texas State Library may be obtained from the library system.
